Supporting Rural Substitute Teachers with Alpaca

High Desert Education Service District (HDESD) is dedicated to supporting thousands of substitute teachers across 10 rural districts. To enhance substitute retention, wellbeing, and engagement, HDESD partnered with Alpaca, implementing pulse surveys and recognition programs to create a more connected and supported substitute experience.

How Alpaca Supports HDESD

  • Substitute Pulse Surveys: After each assignment, substitutes share feedback on their experience, wellbeing, and likelihood to return. A live dashboard provides real-time insights for leadership.
  • Recognition Through Alpaca Packs: Personalized care packages, including wellbeing items and handwritten notes, celebrate substitute teachers for milestones and hard-to-fill assignments.

The Impact

Substitutes feel valued, supported, and prepared, leading to better engagement and improved fill rates. HDESD leaders now have data-driven insights to enhance professional development and strengthen their substitute pool.

"I have been shocked by the number of messages from substitutes, sharing how special they felt receiving an Alpaca pack. Those are the substitutes who say ‘YES’ when we need them next time!"

Ann Marie Anderson, HDESD
